Dr. Terry Mortenson explains in this booklet that the idea of 'millions of years' did not originate with Darwin. He carefully traces the history of the church's move away from the belief in a young earth to a millions of years position under the influence of men such as Comte de Buffon (1779), James Hutton (1795) and Charles Lyell (1833). Once uniformitarianism became the ruling dogma in geology the clergy began to compromise and suggest ideas such as the 'gap theory' and the 'day-age theory'. A most interesting study that helps the reader to unravel this important issue.
